Champion trainer Peter Schiergen is not often present when his two-year-olds make appearances on the country's smaller racecourses. But when he does, his protégés usually run fast. Very fast.
Such was the case on Saturday in Magdeburg, when the Gestüt Brümmerhof-bred Zoffany son Argentum (1.3:1), who he prepares for Liberty Racing 2022, was the hot favorite in the opening contest for the youngsters.
Seen in the lead for the entire race, winning jockey Rene Piechulek only had to ask his partner once very briefly in the straight and the question of the winner was instantly answered. Only the Nedorostek protégé Kalimdor was able to roughly follow, but even he had no chance of winning.
"He always needs a little bit of time. He didn't do any wrong in his first outing and showed a nice improvement today," said a delighted Piechulek after the race. Racing club president Heinz Baltus was also very pleased in the interview. His own race day could not have started much better for him. After all, he is also a member of the third edition of the successful owners' syndicate founded by Lars-Wilhelm Baumgarten.
